GUTTER OPERA COLLECTIVE

A Developing Practice of Queer Performance

We are an emerging interdisciplinary / performance art / gender performance collective. Focused on work reflecting and revealing the experiences the LGBTT2Q communities, we are building a reputation in Vancouver and across the country for pushing the boundaries of gender, taste and art.

Growing out of a Vancouver Queer Film Festival commission (Reflection / Refraction 2011), and working intensively on new touring projects since Feb 2014, our collective goals and artistic objectives are:

  • to provide a living reflection of the Queer communities through performance and interaction;

  • to bring taboo subjects into the light, specifically, to bring the sex back into homosexuality in a direct, visceral, inviting, and entertaining manner, and;

  • to explore new forms of personal connection through music, gender performance, theatre, and social media; and to tell Queer stories in a way that deeply subverts colonial artistic practice.

The individuals in this collective have, for the most part, a practice grounded in the western classical music tradition, but encompassing a wide variety of artistic interests and expertise:

Joel Klein / Maria Toilette

Karen Lee-Morlang / The Morekeys de Schade

Kristina Lemieux / Vadge

Isaiah Bell / The Composer

Myles Laphen / The Designer
